Re: RC: walnut toxcicity info
Well, I had a horse on about 1% walnut shavings (unknowingly). Her signs were
a resting heartrate of 60 (normally 40 or less). I was suspicious when she cam
in from pasture last (usually first) and was depressed. I called my
vet...first response from my vet was "get an EKG on this horse...she must have
a bad heart". I dismissed this as this mare was a top ten 100 mile horse (due
for another in less than two weeks). I took me about 24 hours to figure it
out. I gave her a double dose of banamine and needless to say, got rid of the
shavings.
She finished another 100 miler in the top ten less than two weeks later. I
think what saved her was the fact that she was shod with pads. My old farrier
LOST his stallion within 24 hours after being on walnut shavings (don't know
concentration).
