RE: Support for California Conservation Corps Funding: San Francisco
Bay Area Trail Systems -- Item # 3340-001-0001 -- For Bay Area Ridge
Trail Council
Dear Governor Davis,
The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council needs your support for six Bay Area
Ridge Trail projects which are being considered by you and the State
legislature during the 1999 Budget discussions. As you know, trails
through parks, preserves and greenbelts are in desperate need of
public funding and political support. Protecting trails through our
watersheds, agricultural and recreational lands is certainly an
investment in California's future. While many competing interests vie
for public revenues, the health and welfare of our entire citizenry
depend on accessible recreation and trail opportunities.
The Ridge Trail is requesting $1.6 million to complete six important
trail projects in Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Solano, San Mateo and Santa
Clara Counties:
1. Marin - Construction of the "Inkwells" Bridge over Lagunitas Creek
near Samuel P. Taylor State Park;
2. Sonoma - Development of new trails, upgrade of existing trails,
and acquisition of public easements over private lands adjacent to
Jack London State Historic Park;
3. Napa - Design and construction of 18 miles of Yountville-Cross
Valley trails
4. Solano - Construction of four miles of trail at Lynch Canyon,
combined with critical agricultural/rangeland/resource protections
5. Santa Clara - Improvements to 1.6 miles of trail from Silver Creek
Valley Blvd. and Coyote Creek to Silicon Valley Blvd. creating a
continuous 14 mile trail segment completely multi-use for all three
user groups.
6. San Mateo - Development of 10 miles of trail in the San Francisco
Watershed.
Endorsements are in from the Board of Supervisors of Marin, Napa and
Sonoma Counties, the Yountville Town Council, the Sonoma County
Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District, the Solano County
Farmlands and Open Space Foundation, the Greater Vallejo Recreation
District, the Tri-City and County Cooperative Planning Group Governing
Board, the Sonoma Ecology Center, the Marin County Department of
Parks, Open Space and Cultural Services, the Sonoma Valley Chamber of
Commerce, the Sierra Club-Redwood Chapter, and numerous conservation
and recreation groups.
We will always be grateful for your support in our effort to construct,
enhance and maintain 'our' accessible, scenic Bay Area Ridge Trail --
a significant benefit for the entire San Francisco Bay Area.
Sincerely, __________
