April,
Not ALL CTR are NATRC (with the obstacles, etc.) SEDRA (for Sandy in the SE) and ECTRA in the NE offer CTR where the horse is expected to complete in a fixed time window, and he is judged totally on changes in condition. (Essentially a slow LD ride, minimum & maximum finishing times, and with BC placings for all riders.)
I forget the initials, but there is a program in the upper Mid-West for CTR that is much like SEDRA & ECTRA, too. It's on the endurance home page.

Hey, Sandy,
I'm new to endurance riding, but I'll say I will probably not do a CTR
ride. (Never say never). For one thing, I ride bareback and many CTRs
won't allow me to ride bareback. Second, you get judged in CTRs. I don't
like that. I'd rather get from point A to point B with a healthy horse and
who cares if I can make him back up between two trees?
