This is somewhat the same as Swanton Pacific on the West coast. The BIG
difference between SP, OD, and Tevis is that SP has kind footing (very little
rock, and what there is is soft shale or sandstone); little, if any, dust;
milder weather and none of the East coast humidity; plenty of shade and water
on the trail. But, as you say, the trail keeps coming at you. (I've never
seen Sherman Gap, but it's reputation is legendary. I HAVE seen Milford Gap
from the top, as I was a steward on both the continental and world
championships when they were held at Front Royal.) Swanton Pacific is best
described as UP, down, level, UP, down, level ..... all the way through.
There is still a nice little climb after mile 94. But, OHHH .... the views!!
Giant redwoods, deep canyons, the shale ridges, and moonlight on the Pacific
Ocean. All this and the IAHA National 100 mile Championship, too.
