tick bites

I have noticed that all three of my horses have a strange reaction to tick bites. They get a big swollen area where the tick was. It varies from grape size to plum size. It eventually bursts and drains pus and blood for several days. The swelling remains for about a week, until the area is drained. Is this common to all horses? Is there anything other than hydro therapy and furacin to help it?
