Re: RC: Wild horse trim
I just got around to seeing the website and while I had no idea about
'wild horse' trims or anything like that, when Dorika foundered about 7
years ago the first thing I did was to strip her shoes, increase the
depth of her bedding (shavings) and leave her in a sand paddock as much
as possible. We cut her grain back to zip and had her on bute for a
while as well. The club farrier and vet thought I was nuts, but I just
knew that was what she needed. What we didn't know, thanks to the same
stupid vet, was that she was pregnant and had tied up severely just
before foundering. Her two front feet rotated enough that the bone
tipped through and they had to be padded with cotton and wrapped in duct
tape for about 2 months or so. She was down to bones but never showed
any signs of giving up. After 3 or 4 hellish months, she delivered a
dead filly to everyone's astonishment, and began healing. I didn't shoe
her for a year and no one rode her either, but she spent most of her
days out in the sand. I'm the only one who can tell that she ever had
laminitis. I've had really good vets check and they can't believe that
her front feet were ever that bad since they are now straight on top and
cupped under. But before they were the most beautiful feet I'd ever seen
on a horse....well, actually, they still are.
