We have converted ALL our horses to mechanical hackamores! We use Sleisters
with the wide leather nose band. The wide leather is the mildest. I put it
on a horse and lead it from the ground, turn it in both directions, stop it
and back it up. Then I mount up in a round pen and go through the same
motions. After that, I take the horse to the trails and have never had a
problem.
All I can say is that, if you get a hackamore, get a good one. Don't buy the
cheap aluminum rip-offs. They are cheaply made and not well balanced. Spend
the money for a good one (like Sleister) and you will never regret it.
