He could have a fat or large tongue, it could be hitting teeth, he could have a mouth/tooth infection. You need to look & stick your fingers in there to really tell.
The fact that he objects is reason enough to change, though. Even if it looks & feels right to you, he is the one that has to carry it and respond to it. That's part of the reason that I have a HUGE bit collection when I only have two horses now.
