The Hartwell pelham has a medium port solid mouthpiece and fairly short
swivel shanks. Every horse I have used it on has been comfortable with it.
I eventually get to where I use it like a Western curb with just one set of
reins with weighted snaps so that I don't even have to have direct contact to
have a good "feel" of the horse. With the short shanks that swivel, in an
emergency one CAN go back to riding two-handed even with just the curb rein,
and if one uses one's hands low and wide, one can pull a horse around without
greatly activating the curb chain. VERY nice bit.
