I rode for years on various horses with a short-shanked Hartwell pelham--it
has loose shanks and a solid mild port mouthpiece. Every horse I've used it
on seemed EXTREMELY comfortable with it. It wasn't a "severe" bit at all,
and seemed fine for eating and drinking since the shanks only came down about
to the chin. Still, being a curb bit, for the well-trained horse, one could
ride easily with one hand which was nice under some circumstances.
