The CRI is just one tool among many, and is a sign of metabolic overriding
but not necessarily of riding beyond a particular horse's biomechanical
limits. One always has to look at the whole horse, as one parameter may give
you some very valuable information but not necessarily the whole picture.
The whole point of ride vetting, IMO, is to observe the whole horse
sufficiently to be able to advise the rider how to proceed before any one
parameter becomes sufficiently bad to require that the horse not continue.
It is far better for the horse if we can pick up on subtle signs of pending
problems rather than wait for them to become blatant physical injuries or
metabolic problems.
