The AERC policy does insure AERC against liability. It is also a policy that
ride managers can use to insure their events. It costs $110 for a one-day
ride (this includes 24 hour 100 milers) and will insure the ride management
(including personnel) and unlimited additional insureds (at no extra cost).
A multi-day ride may reuire only 1 or 2 additional insureds (such as BLM,
Forest Service, fairgrounds, state) to be covered. A ride held on private
property may require 10 or more. It is by far the best value in insurance in
my 25+ years of ride management experience. It is affordable, and Insurance
One, Inc. who handles the policy is very efficient and fast. Once I came to
realize that I had forgotten to apply for insurance for a certain ride. They
had the policy in place and certificates faxed to the additional insureds
within 2 days. I highly recommend it. It seems to me that uninsured rides
can bring down trouble on AERC. If a ride manager feels HE has nothing to
lose, that's one thing, but the person suing could go after AERC if he feels
the manager has nothing to give. As much as I dislike too much regulation,
maybe it's time for AERC to require rides to be insured as a part of
sanctioning approval. Something to think about ....
