i found being the original equine heart monitor developer
that good old 
natural equine sweat works well at no cost. Seems that my new monitors
don't even require the start up or boost from applied water or gel. Gel
is 
neat when the horse is at rest to check that your system is working or
your 
just want a quick reading. A little water a a saline mix works fine at no
cost
