Re: Feed question: Grass
You just can't get any better nutrition than good pasture IMO. It's what
horses were evolved to live on and fresh grass contains a lot of nutrition
(like carotene content) that is lost once it's cut, cured and baled.
Because fresh pasture is 75-80%, he'll have to eat alot more pound-wise to
get his nutrition, but then it all works out because he's getting alot of
his water from the pasture as well. If you have access to good quality
fresh pasture, by all means let him at it. Just take a few days to
acclimate him to it if he's not used to grazing and really stay on top of
his deworming program. Keep an eye on him to make sure he's maintaining his
weight where you want it, if not, increase the beet pulp or add a bit of fat
or grain to his mash and he'll bloom.

I'm just wondering where good pasture sits in the feeding catergory for
endurance horses. I have enough pasture to not feed hay at all in the summer
months. I do have everything cross fenced and feed my endurance horse hay
(and of course beet pulp and vitiamns). Is there enough roughage in pasture
for endurance horses? Susan?
