Re: Running Martingales

I really don't have much experience with running martingales (never had
a need), and therefore won't comment on them directly. However, I do
think it's worthwhile to mention two things.

1. Most training devices were invented for legitimate and worthwhile
reasons and have legitimate and worthwhile uses.

2. ANY device, including the simple snaffle... can be a major problem
and cause pain for a horse if the user doesn't understand (or care) what
the device's purpose, function and method are. IOW, in the hands of the
ignorant or naive, damage is done no matter what the device (or lack
thereof).

My only point is that it is always a good idea to learn about how
devices are used, their purpose, their advantages and their drawbacks.
Then, make an informed judgement about what is best for both you and
your horse. This forum provides a *huge* pool of knowlege.

For years, I operated under the impression that a mechanical hackamore
was a "gentle" device simply because it didn't have a bit. I don't
think I screwed up any horses via misuse of a mechanical hack. But
today, I cringe when I see people using them harshly and horses throwing
their heads up in pain. I do use a mechanical hack on one of my horses
now, but I like to think I know how to use it gently and properly.

There is excellent information to be had on this list with respect to
lots of things including training techniques. That's why I'm here.
Listen to everything and take home what works for you... that's my
motto. It's rarely worth getting undies in a knot over.
