Well, I just answered the last post privately on the subject of vaccine
placement, but since this is the second one to bring it up, I will make a
comment here. The muscles in the neck are a series of many small muscles
with fascia and connective tissue in between. It is entirely too easy to
have part of an injection actually go between muscle layers and not be
adequately absorbed in the neck. Even we veterinarians were taught to
administer vaccines in the neck in many cases, but over the years, I have
given up the practice of giving ANY injections in the neck, and instead using
the large muscles in either the pectoral region of the chest or the back of
the thigh. Not only will you reduce the subsequent soreness significantly by
getting the vaccine properly placed in a large muscle mass, but in the
unfortunate event of having an abcess form at an injection site, you also
have good ventral drainage and minimal damage.
