Well, I have shared my feelings on bute for the trip home on this list
before. First of all, if you have a sufficiently comfortable trailer, you
drive sanely, and your horse is used to trailering (all of which should be
prerequisites to hauling a horse 12 hours to compete in a sport like
endurance anyway) he certainly should not need bute for the ride home unless
he has been overridden at the ride. If that is the case, and you feel that
he really does need the bute, then you shouldn't be looking at competing in
two weeks anyway. To me, the bute-on-the-way-home thing is just one more
example of our whole overemphasis of trying to manage by pharmacy instead of
by common sense. Since most of my horses will relax in the trailer to the
point of going to sleep, I fail to see how the bute is really helping with
the trailer ride.
Once again, there is no argument about the 1000-fold or more increase in
sensitivity of tests. That's why AERC has the review policy that it does. I
still feel that if you are concerned about residuals given the review policy,
then you need to review either your pharmacological approach or your intended
ride schedule.
