I have had a problem with these in the past- not with me but with them rubbing my horse.  I too thru away the leather protector thingys and use 2 neoprene tail wraps cut in half on each leather.  And yes Angie I too use nice garish red duct tape to keep them from riding up while I ride.

Not too attractive but keeps everybody comfy!
