RE: Back Pain

Title: RE: Back Pain

Peggy,

Have a good rider/instructor evaluate your position.  Your back shouldn't be hurting unless you have an old injury or an anatomically "odd" back.  Some riders sit with the lower back arched and their upper back and shoulders thrown back.  Another possibility is the saddle may be putting you in an awkward position.  This may not be the problem, but it would be worth investigating.

BTW - You didn't mention what pain killer your were using.  Do not use Advil (or the generics for Ibuprofen) when you are dehydrated <at all>.  It can cause kidney failure when taken while dehydrated.  I've seen athletes come into the hospital who had popped Advil all day and became dehydrated.  It is NOT a pretty sight!  Plan to take some before you ride (decrease any inflammation before it really starts the pain cycle) and then take it afterwards when you are catching up on your hydration.

I just completed my 3rd 25 miler and am a bit worked about my back.  Usually
when I start riding my lower back hurts but after about 20 minutes the pain
stops and I am fine the rest of the ride (25 miles).
