Hi April, Actually, in the West most commercial square bales intended for shipping are one ton squares (2000 lbs). Small bales can be made from 50 to 125 lbs by adjusting the baler. We put up some small bales for the ladies to feed to their horses just because they are easier to handle, but if you are sending a standard semi load into interstate commerce, small bales are not feasible. A semi will hold about 17 tons of small bales and 24 to 26 tons of one ton squares. The semi will charge about $1 per mile to deliver the hay whether his load is 17 or 26 tons. You can see the price difference to the buyer and why the large buyers buy large bales.
