Hi Cheryl! My definition of "base" is EVERYTHING my horse has done up to
this point. Although I didn't consider him to have much of a base until he
had done several slow 50 miler's and even a couple of slow 100's. Now, after
many 100's and 50's I consider him to have a solid 'base' on him. I'm no
racer though, so I'm sure my definition isn't "correct" in terms of endurance
"racing". My goal is to have a sound happy horse who can participate in this
sport for years. That is a far different goal than someone who wants to top
ten everything they enter (although I wouldn't mind top tenning something).
I have to point out that at my slower pace, you get to enjoy the naked hikers
you spot along the way -- not to mention the great friends you make along the
trail who happen to have their clothes on.
