This thread calls to mind a new 30 mile CTR in our area a few yrs ago.  The 
trail map indicated many loop backs & loop overs --- the most confusing route 
I'd ever seen, so I just prayed it was well marked.  About 2/3 of the way 
nature was screaming, & since no one was with me, hadn't seen any riders for 
1/2 hr, & given it was a CTR, I thought everyone had probably settled into 
their pace & it was unlikely anyone would overtake me.  It was a an 
overgrown, brushy area & I spotted a little open area behind a good sized 
shrub that would shield me if everyone did come up behind, so I hopped off, 
dropped trou --- just as a rider came trotting up from the opposite direction 
(with a full view!).
Fortunately it was a female friend ---- who so tactfully never mentioned 
quite how she had spotted me when we crossed on the trail --- she doing the 
loop for the first time (having gone out at the back of the pack) and me 
(unwittingly) doing it in reverse the second time.
