back in 1965 I mucked stalls at Yosemite (Valley Stable or Bridal Veil -
don't remember) for the opportunity to ride in the string on the trails.
little did I know that I'd wind up owning my horses (3 now) and becoming
involved with the sport of endurance riding. I even got to look after a Go
Man Go colt for a few weeks as a result of my mucking capabilities. He was
stabled at a ranch out in the middle of nowhere, or so it seemed. Poor colt
was absolutely crazy, though. Terrified of anyone and anything - fiercely
defensive, dangerously so. Couldn't go in the corral or stall with him in
it. I wonder what happened to him, if anyone ever could listen to him and
calm him down. Anyway, I was a terribly young 22, and willing to work hard
for nothing except a simple, slow trail ride on a red roan horse, probably
gelding. Don't even remember that. Now I'm a terribly young 55, and
willing to work hard for nothing but the simple, somewhat faster pleasure of
terribly long rides on my own horse.
Anyone who hasn't visited Yosemite, should try to win a slot to go there.
Tuolume Meadows. It would be so much better now that traffic is controlled
and lessened.
