Energy consumption is measured by oxygen consumption, as there is a direct
relationship between the two (x liters of oxygen consumed above maintenance
= x calories burned, so by measuring oxygen consumption during exercise, you
can measure the energy required to do that exercise). So when energy
consumption was measured under clinical conditions, no, it didn't work out
that the smaller horse was burning as much or more because of the increased
stride frequency.
