Breeding is not the same as performance.  Performance ability is not a
predictor of what will be passed on genetically.  Secretariat is a good
example of this.  His racing record was outstanding, but his record as a
sire is less fantastic.

Pedigrees don't perform, but they do predict which genes will be passed
on to allow great performance!  If you want to play genetic roulette, as
Susan G said, the sure bet is picking a pedigree full of performers, even
if the sire isn't outstanding, rather than to pick a pedigree of
non-performers, with an outstanding performance pedigree.  A flash in the
pan is just that - the rest of the pan is full of duds.  Lif
