RE: Big Horn Saddles

You might try a wedge pad under the Big Horn saddle -
thicker in front, tapering down to nothing
under the cantle. Sounds like the tree is
a little too wide for your horse. I'm using an
extra wide tree saddle and wedge pad to deal with my
horse's downhill back - the pad also helps
keep the saddle in place very well riding
down hills. Just make sure the fattest part
of the wedge pad is sticking out in front of the
saddle. (State Line has these pads - Cashel Pads).

I'm currently having problems with mine shooting forward over my
young horses shoulders on down hills. Of course, he's a little
pot-bellied, and doesn't have great withers yet. The center-fire
rigging puts the cinch at the fat part of his belly, and the cinch
just wants to keep working it's way toward his elbows, which pulls
the whole saddle forward.

I've been using just the front rings with better success, but it
still works forward. Any suggestions? I like the saddle, it's
comfortable, easy to post, etc.

Do you think once his withers "come up" a bit more (he's currently 4)
it won't be such a problem? I did order a crupper, in the meantime
I've been riding him in a Stubben (wide tree) which fits great.
