Hey, gang, For my own edification, I popped on the web to look up instances of sugardyne and it's use on horses to help heal. This is what I found. (Interestingly, most of the info I found regarding sugardyne was in the context of hoof problems and foundering.) BTW, Thanks to the Greenalls for the sugardyne recipe. I made up a batch for Apache (looks a lot more mediciney than what I had made up). Maximum Hoof Power by Cherry Hill: "Sugardine is very effective for treating thrush." Chapter 11 Bacteria does not grow in the presence of pure sugar . Add the betadine to prevent infection. The sugar is very compatible with new tissue, not harsh and drying, and it draws fluids, so it promotes drainage. Veterinarian, Dr. Brent Glaser, "Sugar in high concentrations inhibits bacterial growth by preventing water from entering bacterial cell walls, thus they die. The bacteria are also killed by the iodine." For you recipe-aholics, don't know how this works, but might go well with the Greenall's method. sugardine: to heal wounds, place in open wound twice daily. eight parts granulated sugar 1 part providone-iodine ointment 1 part providone-iodine solution Sugar is antibacterial at high concentrations. A paste of sugar and iodine (sugardine) is a common and effective treatment for hoof infections. On the other hand, here is somebody else on another list spouting: "sugar is a great medium for bacteria to start growing" Doesn't appear to be a vet or a doctor, or somebody scientific, though. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
