Halter/bridle combo (was Newbie tack questions)
Hi, Hope,
I'm not an experienced endurance rider, but I have been riding forever.
I got a nylon halter/bridle combination for my Appaloosa because he was
impossible to lead by the reins of the bridle to cool out and I hated
pulling on his mouth all the time (we've since worked on that particular
problem and he's getting a lot better at walking beside me to cool out). I
got one from Jeffers. But I don't really like it. I like the concept ok,
but the one I got doesn't fit Apache very well. I had to punch a lot of
new holes in it just to get the bit up in the corners of his mouth. And
the halter part has to be too tight to finish getting the bit up where it
needs to be. Also, the quality of the one I got is not the best around
(course I only paid $17, what did I expect?). Most of the time, I end up
using my favorite black nylon bridle. If I do use the halter/bridle combo,
I sometimes just use the halter and take the bit for back up if I decide
he's not listening and needs to have the bit.
That said, I would like to have another halter/bridle combo, but this time,
I'll have to put out more money and try to get one that fits him better.
