Re: Cruppers and breaching....
I don't think you want to use a breaching- they have to be tightened and
loosened before and after down hills I think otherwise they sore the
horses/mules butt. Even though I live in WI where it is fairly flat, I
started using a crupper on my horses in the '80's after I almost had a wreck
going down a hill on a trail ride. They work great. I have never had a
problem with a saddle slipping even when the chinch or girth is much to
loose. I have also trained 8 or 10 horses to use them with no problem at
all. I just saddle them, put the crupper on and tug on it a few times.
Some will jump a time or two or clamp their tail down for an hour or so but
they all have accepted the crupper by the third or fourth ride. By the way
almost all horses are longer in the back when first saddling than later. I
find out the proper adjustment and then don't worry that it seems tight when
I start out. Of course one needs to also use a martingale or breast collar
on this type of rig.
