 Shoes aren't supposed to come off.  If it is 6 weeks and you've been doing a

Here's the problem with that. If everyone adopts this posture, then it tends
to cause farriers to undershoe the horse, put on a size too small, then rasp
down the foot to fit the shoe--makint it impossible for the horse to grab and
pull off, but leading to a half-dozen hoof problems. 
I know it is the waythings are done, and I used to insist on it myself. But no
more--I have enough to do to insist that the horse be shod properly these
days.
