I went to the AERC convention in Reno last month and I think I must have been at a different one than the one Friendly LDs from the SE attended! When I left here (northern VA) I had only met one endurance rider so far. I haven't done a ride yet, and I've only just started working with my horse (purchased in January). I knew a few names of people from RideCamp. I thought the people were exceptionally friendly and welcoming. I saw someone passing out nametags at the first RideCamp breakfast, right after I sat down. I'm a very outgoing person and will just introduce myself and start up a conversation so I guess I just butted myself into the group. But I have never met a more welcoming group of horse people in my whole life! No one cares who I am (or am not), what I look like, what kind of horse I have, what kind of tack I like -- and they are the absolute best at putting up with a zillion questions followed by agonizing indecision about things like what saddle to buy or which vitamin supplement to use. Like I said before, I must have been at a different AERC convention.
