Cosequin bits and pieces
More bits and pieces from the Cosequin Challenge...
My friend Bob Walsh had leased his horse Aries to Valerie for one of the
UAE riders to ride, got the horse down there on Friday but his rider
never showed up. Since he'd come all that way he said what the heck and
started the 50. He and Betty Baker of PA were the first two into the
first vet check at 16 (?) miles, but the early speed caused a muscle
cramp and Aries was out. So Bob crewed for Becky Harris of Michigan the
rest of the day, and she was running in 6th in late afternoon, just
before he left.
Here also reported that...
The 100 started 60 horses at 4 a.m., and the winner finished at about
5:15 p.m. Lots of contenders were pulled, including Kim Orr, Lari Shea
and Patty Pizzo. We haven't heard the fate of Linda Crandell and Maggy
Price, but they were still in the hunt when Bob left. He said that the
UAE riders came in to the halfway mark and all just quit -- they'd had
enough! -- even though their horses looked fine. They had a cadre of 20
Australians crewing who did all the hands-on.
The trail was beautifully marked and the ride generally well organized,
right down to the idea of having photo-ID cards for crews, which became
impractical at a certain point with people arriving into the night. The
vet staff was comparable to ROC -- head vet was Bob Beecher, Ray Randall
was there, and Nancy Loving and Don Kiefer were treatment vets.
Parameters were 60, and lots of horses were taking the full 30 minues to
recover in the heat humidity, he said.
Looking forward to seeing the complete results...
