We all want to thank the ride management for taking on the challenge of a new ride in a populated area. While there are improvements to be made and problems to overcome, we feel they made a great effort.
The only real dark cloud on the race was the conduct of one of the riders. While all of us got lost at different times during the day, 5 people became more lost than the rest. The winner of the ride was riding with this group and encouraged them to turn around. The 5 ignored her when she did turn around and they ended up coming in the wrong way , retracing an earlier trail. Dabney found the right trail and won the race.
The leader of the lost group, Larry Bowers decided to go back out on trail after cutting almost 6 miles of the legitimate course. He rode around outside of camp for a little while, got in front of the real winner (which means he rode about 12 miles in 15 minutes) , backed off and snuck in second. Pit crews, riders, and Larry all know he cheated. He is trying for a national championship so I guess he rationalizes this detestable action in this manner. Larry continues to demean the sport. You'll remember him from Tevis several years ago, bloody spurs and all.
