In 1963 Pat Fitzgerald won the Tevis Cup at well over 200 pounds (I do not
have exact figure)
In 1966 Bud Dardi won weighting 202 pounds
In 1968 he won it again at 202 pounds
In 1976 Sam Arnold tied for the win at 220 pounds (48 pounds more than the
person he tied with)
In 1979 Boyd Zontelli won weighing 205 pounds
In 1981 Boyd won again (different horse) at 210 pounds
In 1985 Boyd got their first weighing 211 pounds
In 1993 Chris Knoch tipped the scales at 208 pounds
In 1994 he successfully defended his previous win at 211 pounds
The averagge weight carried by a Tevis Cup winning horse from 1965 thru 1994
is184 pounds.
With the exception of Chris Knoch, I do not think any of these men were great
runners. I will happily give a dollar to the AERC Trail Fund for every mile
Pat Fitzgerald or Sam Arnold ever ran during the course of a Tevis Cup Ride.
Maybe they would have if they had thought of it, but I don't think it ever
occurred to anybody to do anything except ride the horse. Julie
