Thanks to everyone who answered my questions about using a Paso Fino for LD. The information was invaluable in making my decision.
I just wanted to let you know that I decided to stick with the little QH. Although I felt that the Paso would be fun and could function at the LD level, she was very green. I just couldn't see investing the time and energy to start her (she doesn't even load and my mare walks in and backs off on voice commands), only to have to begin again when my baby is ready.
A new saddle made the QH more comfortable and somewhat more forward moving. She still doesn't love the trail, but no longer acts as though she hates it. I hope to use her lightly next year or two for a few LD, then continue to to use her alternately with the little Arab for LD until such time as the little one is ready to step up. I don't think the QH will ever go up, but she may fool me and eventually be able to do a fifty. She's not a heavy-bodied horse, and has a canon measurement of 7.75 right now. A little light, but she's only 14.2 and hasn't been in conditioning. I'm hoping that it will develop more as she becomes more fit.
Thanks again for the advice. The Paso was a lovely little mare and would be great fun to own, but I've already decided to go towards real endurance in the future and she appeared to be more of a side trail than the main road forward toward that goal.
