hunters bump

Nancy Loving(Conformation and Performance) says it results from tearing
the ligaments at the sacroiliac joint. Says it happens from the
thrusting which occurs, for example, when an under conditioned horse
trots up a steep hill.
Goes on to say that once it is fully healed there is little effect on
performance.

I own a gelding who is spooky as .... at anything that appears over or
behind him (yes, I'm working on it), and he also has a wicked hunters
bump. Makes me wonder if he got it jumping away from the big scarey
monster.
