I've never dismounted because of rough terrain. I dismount on long
downhills to save wear & tear on the horse, and sometimes to let my knees
loosen up some. I dismount after dark on 100's sometimes and just enjoy a
walk. It's amazing how it helps me not be as sore the morning after.
