Winter riding/after dark

Hello! Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself by talking about winter riding in
the middle of August, but I was just wondering about whether others
encounter some problems in the winter like me - To those of you who ride in
the winter, which I imagine most of us do, how do you manage to keep trails
clear of snow? After awhile, if there is enough snow that falls, the snow
gets pretty deep and I can't use all of the trails. I end up having to ride
on the side of the road for the times that the snow gets deep and crusty.
And when it is dark, I don't feel safe at all riding in the dark on the side
of the road. Some people are just not cautious when they pass me and my
horse on the road and go zipping past. My horse is used to this, but I
figure the darkness just puts one more thing against me and gives reckless
drivers an added excuse to hit me. Any ideas?
