Actually, we in the Southeastern Endurance Riders Association made a rule
that a child must be a minimum of 8 years old to do an SERA sanctioned
ride, which I believe all our rides are.
We spoke with Pediatricians and specialists and they suggested that at
the rate a small child is growing, LONG periods of riding could damage
their growing bones...not to mention the chances of them controlling a
large animal at that age.
I know of a rider who started at 5, and has the knees of old women at age
13.
