In a message dated 98-06-25 15:29:47 EDT, you write: << poisoning is contagious? Or could it have come from a common food source, which means other horses around the afflicted horse cou >> I'm thinking this topic is of great value to all riders...especially someone trying to make time and not needing bushes every 15 minutes. This stuff doesn't respond to immodium!!! Yes, cases have been reported to Centers for Disease Control by horse people from horse feces contact. I'm not a vet, just a public health educator ...so here goes. Salmonellosis has about 200 differenct serotypes that are common. Reserviors include domestic and wild animals awa ; poultry, rodents, tortoises, turtles, chick dogs, cats, and people. (Wash your hands after toileting!) . Mode of transmission, ingestion of the organism in food contaminated by the feces of infected man or animals: also in whole eggs, egg products, meat, poultry, and pharmaceuticals of animal origin. Infection is also disseminted by contaminated animal feeds and fertilizers prepared from contaminated meat scraps, tankage, fish meal and bones. Infection by inhalation is also considered a real possiblity awa contaiminated water supplies. Incubation 6-72 hrs. Period of communicability: several days to serveral weeks, occasionally a temporary carrier up can continue for several months. Severity is related to the serotyp of the organism, number ingested and the host susceptiblities or resistances. Since you know about it, you now the symptoms so control measures: Isolation of infected party from shared food supplies and water supplies until treatment and stool samples show clear. Concurrent disinfection of shared sources whenever possible. (Spread out that manure to hot sun away from major food sources). Terminal cleaning (Arnold Swartzenhoffer!!!) not. Deep clean anywhere you can. You wear gloves, keep your hands from your face when working with the sick animal...wash, wash, scrub your hands. Do not let your dog eat hoof cuttings!!! Don't allow horses to graze with poultry. Sorry for the text book, but I'm like that. Linda Treatment: rehydration, possible electroylte therapy ... that's what Vets are for.
