Nutrition & salesmen
Hi Susan; I mostly lurk on Ridecamp; but had to ask you a few questions as I'm
under the impression that you do not work for a feed company. I feed a
national brand of feed (Manna-Pro Super Horse 10) and add Vita-Flex Accel
supplement. (It seems to jump start my geldings digestive tract as he was a
poor eater, since feeding him Accel his appetite has picked up and he has
gained weight.) My question concerns FL soil and trying to decide if I need
to add energy and Ca. We have good grass for FL standards as our 60+ acres
was used to raise dairy calves for 45 years, most horses turned out on our
pasture gain weight readily. My horses are turned out on pasture 24/7 unless I
am going away and must pen them in the paddock for an early start or something
like that. Another words I have grass coming out my ears so I don't need to
buy hay.
I used to add Rice Bran and then found out about the unbalance Ca:P ratios
and all the talk one company does about the others re:bacteria and
unstabilized bran. I stopped because I couldn't get a straight answer from any
of their so-called nutritionist, all they could tell me was their product was
the best. Their recomendation was to feed more of their product and less
grain, even though one of my horses is fat as a pig on 1/3 pd of grain a day!!
My concerns are:
FL/GA grown hay being just filler (coastal) but Phosphorous rich!!
FL grass just filler, but Phosphorous rich ( even though most horses are
fat.)
Feed from national company lacks selenium
Am I looking at a CA imbalance? What can I add to balance this diet? Where
can I get a straight answer, from someone who is not sea product?
Can you help me with some guidelines or direct me to the best place to start?
I intend to 25/50's this fall with my gelding as he has been doing 2 years of
trail training LSD, IF I can keep weight on him.
Thanks, Jackie Baker
Sorry if this is confusing, I just came from dinner w/ endurance freinds 2
bottles of wine later.
