Book values would be about 16 lbs/day for a horse doing light work to 21 lbs/day for a horse in moderate work. Trail riding is usually considered light work, but mountains and distance could easily change that - not however if the horse is only keeping up with hikers. Beet pulp is a fine food, but I am not sure I would want to feed it as 100% of diet - and certainly not for extended periods. In any case, the food change should be done gradually.
I am currently useing LMF taco pellets for backcountry use where certified weed free feed is required. It is better balanced, but I would prefer to find something with a somewhat higher fiber content; but choices are limited.
