Oddly enough, both grain and the long chain sugars tend to peak blood glucose
at the same time--two hours--but the gran peak is lower than that of the
sugars. At 50 minutes in, you've got a strong surge of blood sugar going on.
Some horses peak at 1 to 1 1/2 hours. We use glucometers to run a horse's
sugar cycle (check every 30 minutes for 4 hours) so that we get the best
timing on raceday--miss the timing and run at a low glucose and you'll have a
snoozer--at least for a 2:00 race.
