cleaning alum. trailers

Hope this can qualify as "endurance related" as many have to haul their
horses to the rides!  How does everyone clean their aluminum trailers?  We
just use soapy wash for the grime....but aluminum gets that corrosive look
to it....how do you shine it back up...without having to "buff" the whole
thing???
I am getting conflicting info. about going acidic or alkaline in the
approach....what has worked for others?
