They definitely fit the stockier description. The one "great" that is an
exception is RT Muffin, but I think he is a horse that is more suited to 50's
who just happens to be good enough to just be a 50-mile horse for 100 miles.
Pretty rare sort of critter... But the other three absolutely personify my
earlier post, as do many others who are slightly less famous.
I personally don't think height is as much of a factor as body build, but
there are very few tall horses of the appropriate build to be 100-milers,
hence they are more rare there. When you do see tall horses excelling, they
are more likely the stocky sort. Example--Len Fox's Stanley, who was a
bronze-medalist at Pan-Am and runner-up for BC. (Stanley still isn't
exceptionally tall--just a bit taller than most that I see up front on 100's).
More stocky horses up front: both of Ona Lawrence's horses (RC and Max) and
Westlakes' MC Rams Z (another one with a bit more height).
