The mare I ride (I ride for someone elst) has had craked heals for over a year now. I just rode my first 50 miles (Aprilfest) in Ontario and by the end they were much worse. I have been taking care of them by washing them with antibacterial soap, drying them as much as possible and slathering them with either vaseline or zinc oxide cream four times a week (when I get out to ride). This keeps them in control but I could tell that they were bothering her after the race. (She was not lame in any way from them but when I cleaned and put vaseline on them I could tell it bothered her) Does anyone have similar experiences? I would like to get rid of this completely so the longer distances don't irritate them so much she goes lame. Any suggestions?
