I just wanted to add a small note on this subject. Keene was the spookiest little guy I knew. Everything was going to eat him, and this fear increased with speed also. We were in a 3-day eventing clinic (just for kicks) and the woman taught me that while the leg opposite of the object should be my strongest, apply some pressure from the other leg as well. This teaches the horse to keep moving forward, but also assures him that I'm not asking him to confront the object. Just a few times doing this, Keene gained so much confidence & our spooks reduced tremendously.
