Hi, Juli--
The hives on your horse are likely due to one of two things--either an
allergic reaction to the change in feed, or some sort of allergy to bug bites.
With the history you describe of new feed at the barn, that is the most
likely, in my opinion.  Alfalfa is a common culprit in food allergies that
raise bumps or welts.  I would suggest changing feeds if possible, and if that
does not make the problem go away, consult your vet.
