Raymond,
       I'd like to jump in here.  Although it's true some aussie saddles are
closer to the back than others, sometimes it is because of the conformation
of the horse.  You can only get so close to the back, and after that it's
rubbing.  As long as the back is clear by 1 to 1 1/2" you're OK.  Therefore,
the saddle must fit the horse., to fit close.  Secondly, the endurance
saddles, and the handmade saddles, such as Norm Wilson, feel closer,
although they are still the same distance from the spine. It is built
lighter.
      The stockseat has a 4 1/2" dip, is considered a deep seat, and is
heavier.  It may have more cushion built in.  You should never be able to
get more than 2 to 3 fingers through the gullet., on any saddle.  These
Australians have gone through 200 years  of trial and error, that we now
benefit from.  They weren't dummies, y ou know.  They put our 3-day event
riders to shame!  Australians also use English disciplines.  Just depends on
what type of saddle you're looking for .  I can find you one to suit any
purpose, horse, or riding style.
   For instance, if you need to rope, go get a roping saddle! USA makes the
best in the world,........maybe the only one!
