Re: resistance to Ivomec
Dear Samm,
I have wormed my horses with Ivermectin exclusively since the stuff first
hit the market. No rotation. My horses have always been as healthy as . . .
well, as horses. I have read the debates on ridecamp and other places as to
rotation vs no roatation etc, but my attitude is, if it ain't broke, don't try
to fix it. As far as I can tell, it ain't broke. I own a 25 going on 26 year
old gelding, who has been my friend for 22 years, and who acts like a horse
half his age. My horses (knock on wood) do not colic, or indeed, ever seem to
be sick at all!!!! I do get the occasional lacertation, scrape, what not . .
. but I cannot see this as being worm related. <G>
I am leary of Quest, as well as Strongid-C. I've heard too many
(admittedly anecdotal ) bad stories.
And you are correct, Samm, parasites in our horses is not off-topic. So
here is my post. Now, if it gets the rotation vs no rotation debate raging
again, THAT may be off topic. Isn't it so silly we have to qualify all of our
posts with such hesitancy?

hey guys..I have a question for you!! I have heard from another list that
I am on that a horse recently died from parasite infestation due to
resistance to ivomec. Supposedly this horse was de-wormed regularly with
Ivomec, died anyway from build up of parasites. I think probably this was
just a coincidence, plus, the person asking was a dog person, not a horse
person, so he didn't know what the regular de-worming consisted of.
It could be the owner thought it was once yearly or something like that, I
don't know. I regularly use Ivomec and feel that it's doing a good job. I
do rotate.
Endurance related why? If I ask my horse to run 50 miles and he is
parasite laden, that can't be good. I'm curious. Please reply privately
if you have any insights...bartesc@mail.auburn.edu
Also, I dont' know any further details on this horse or where it was when
it died. It was a dog list that I am on that reported it.
I just wanted to know if any research was supporting the story of
resistance to Ivomec.
thanks >>
